• Strawberry Season

Tis the season of blooming, renewal, Spring. And there is nothing better than a juicy, red strawberry from a local vendor to celebrate that. Plant City, a little over an hour southwest of St. Cloud, has an annual Strawberry Festival but there’s no need to travel when you can head to the heart of Downtown Kissimmee and indulge yourself in some strawberries fresh from the farm.

I’m talking about the weekly farmer’s market in Toho Square off Darlington Avenue. Every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can find locally grown produce, like strawberries, green peppers and tomatoes-some grown without pesticides-for great prices. The best part is the vendors themselves are often super knowledgeable about their products. Better than the supermarket.

The man who sold me three overflowing pints of strawberries for $5 (my son had requested some a couple days ago) told me about the different kinds of strawberries and how there is a list ranking the most popular types of strawberries. Did you know that?

I also checked out packets of Hawaiian-made spices (try the lava salt, perfect for margaritas), the glorious smells of freshly baked sandwich and banana breads, and some beautiful handmade jewelry. Other vendors sell hand-carved wooden signs, tables and toys; or peddle plants including vegetables just waiting to be planted into your garden. Another stall held wonderfully handmade baby blankets, fabric books and children’s hair accessories. I know where I’ll be shopping for the next baby shower I’m invited to!

The farmer’s market is a great way to top off your morning strolling through downtown Kissimmee. You can check out the antique stores, browse the cigar shop or stop into one of the delicious locally-owned restaurants (my favorites include Willy’s Weiners, get The Godfather; Susan’s Courtyard Cafe, her soups are amazing; and Mrs. Mac’s, where there’s always a daily special and the deserts are sinful).

If you’re traveling with kiddies, check out the lakefront of Lake Tohopekaliga where there’s a large playground and a yummy ice cream shop. It’s just a short walk from Toho Square.

So grab your canvas bags and meet me down at the farmer’s market one of these Thursday. Don’t let the crowd deter you, it’s worth the haggle and the fresh produce, available at great prices. Plus, you’re supporting the local families growing in-season fruits and veggies. I hope to see you there!

The farmer’s market is held every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Toho Square located at the end of Darlington Avenue, off of Broadway Avenue.
