• A Relaxing Experience: Airboat Tour

This  morning, I experienced a whole new thing, something I had never done before. Maybe I should thank Groupon, you know, this website where you can buy discounted tickets for attractions, or meals etc. 3 months ago, there was a deal for Boggy Creek Airboat Tours, in Kissimmee. So I got a Groupon for the three of us and booked a 1 hour tour for today. Fortunately, this morning the weather was perfect. Not too hot, some sun, partly cloudy, but no rain like what we got 2 days in a row last week. It took us about 25 min to get there from North Poinciana Road, Laguna Bay Villas, driving rather…slowly. In France, we drive faster than that. But my mother thinks people are crazy here because they keep changing lanes, or pass you on the right , and I keep telling her it’s normal, because there are some many exits.

So we arrived at  Boggy Creek Airboat Tour about 25mn before the scheduled tour, checked in with our Groupon with no problems and were showed the way to the opposite shop, where my parents bought…a small alligator head as a souvenir for their grandsons. Yuck!  Then it was time to go.

We were 8 people in the same airboat, so we had enough room to feel comfortable. My parents and I were in front, and at some points, we got a few bugs in our faces, but nothing too bad. What’s surprising, and what some people may not know, is that an airboat is really noisy.

That’s why each visitor is given a headset. Even with the headset on your ears you can still hear the noise from the propeller, but it doesn’t distract you too much. Only really talkative people will be bothered, because you can’t talk. :-) The ride in itself is…magical: you glide through the vegetation on the lake, you see many birds and we had the chance to see 3 very small alligators including one which had just hatched, according to our guide.

After the ride, you can get your photo taken with a small alligator. This is the least pleasant part of the experience: it costs from $15 to $20 extra bucks, it’s not allowed to take photos yourself, and the alligator you can hold is used as a prop, being quickly put away in a sport bag under the counter of the register once the photos are taken. I wonder what our national animal protector Brigitte Bardot would think of this.  :-(
